In all equity, 2019’s “Godzilla: King of the Monsters” has a number of positives. The third installment in Legendary Photos’ MonsterVerse continuity ditches the unique MUTO titans from 2014’s “Godzilla” in favor of a veritable kaiju buffet. The film marches out franchise veterans King Ghidorah, Mothra, Rodan, and a slew of different big beasts. It options quite a few hard-hitting battle sequences and big, apocalyptic stakes. On paper, the movie must be rubbing shoulders with the best Godzilla motion pictures ever made.
Whereas audiences just like the film for the popcorn flick that it’s, one thing about it does not fairly click on. The perfect kaiju movies have a fantastic story to again up the super-sized motion — simply ask King Kong. Sadly, “King of the Monsters” did not get this specific memo, and opts to do the naked minimal to justify the admittedly spectacular titan battles, losing nice actors like Charles Dance, Vera Farmiga, Ken Watanabe, and Millie Bobby Brown on a threadbare catastrophe film plot.
Had “Godzilla: King of the Monsters” bothered with an honest story, followers and critics may treasure it as an all-timer. Nonetheless, the film is the fifth-worst Godzilla film ever made, with a lukewarm Rotten Tomatoes score of 43%.
