Regardless of his imposter syndrome, Johnny Depp beat out among the greatest names in movie (and music) for his breakout position.
The Academy Award nominee revealed he beat out the likes of Tom Hanks, Tom Cruise and even Michael Jackson for his eponymous position in Tim Burton‘s 1990 gothic fantasy Edward Scissorhands.
He instructed director Tara Wooden that Cruise “was not far-off from truly enjoying Edward Scissorhands — true story” as he mirrored on the movie for an untitled docuseries about Burton, in keeping with Individuals.
Depp finally landed the position of the loving outcast, who was created by a scientist (Vincent Value) with scissors instead of his arms. When his creator dies, a neighborhood lady (Dianne Wiest) takes Edward into her suburban house, the place he falls in love together with her daughter (Winona Ryder) and faces ostracism from the townspeople.
The actor mentioned Burton and Caroline Thompson’s script “handed by all the pieces, something, strong and went to the very core of no matter I’m. The writing was lovely. The character was lovely. What I suppose [attracted] me emotionally was that Edward was me. It’s precisely what I must be doing.”

Coming off his 1987-1990 stint on 21 Leap Road, Depp felt “pigeonholed” as a teen idol. He “needed to battle” the label, noting that his starring position in John Waters’ 1990 cult basic Cry-Child “was the primary strong step within the path I wished to go.”
However given Burton’s rising star following Pee-wee’s Massive Journey (1985) and Beetlejuice (1988), in addition to Hollywood’s curiosity within the challenge, Depp thought, “He’s by no means going to forged me when everybody in Hollywood is after the half.”
“Tim’s actually juggling as a result of he’s getting hit by his agent, the studio, all people. So I known as my agent after studying the script and mentioned, ‘Please cancel the assembly, I’m not going,’” recalled Depp. “She mentioned, ‘Are you f***ing nuts?’”

He continued, “It was bizarre as a result of there’s all the time that bastard in your cranium that goes ‘Come on, man. You’re a TV actor man.’ As a result of at the moment it was nearly either-or.”
After Depp “lastly gave in” and met Burton, he received the half, which finally earned him his first Golden Globe nomination.
Depp has since labored with Burton on Ed Wooden (1994), Sleepy Hole (1999), Charlie and the Chocolate Manufacturing unit (2005), Corpse Bride (2005), Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Road (2007), Alice in Wonderland (2010) and Darkish Shadows (2012).
The untitled Tim Burton docuseries premieres Monday, June 10 on the Tribeca Movie Pageant.
