Bernard Hill died early on Sunday morning, his agent Lou Coulson confirmed. No trigger has been given.
He performed Captain Edward Smith within the 1997 Oscar-winning movie Titanic, and King Théoden within the Lord of the Rings.
His breakout function was in BBC TV drama Boys from the Blackstuff, the place he portrayed Yosser Hughes, a personality who struggled – and sometimes failed – to deal with unemployment in Liverpool.
Hill shall be seen in collection two of The Responder, a BBC drama starring Martin Freeman, which begins airing on Sunday.
