Matt Damon’s Most Controversial Film Is Blowing Up On Netflix

Even Matt Damon thinks “The Nice Wall” was a mistake … and he stated one in all his daughters pointed that out to him as effectively.

Throughout an episode of “WTF with Marc Maron” in 2021 (by way of The Hollywood Reporter), Damon stated that he felt as if director Zhang Yimou was attempting to stick to far too many notes from high-ranking Hollywood backers — which, to him, was a nasty signal. “I used to be like, that is precisely how disasters occur,” Damon stated to Damon on the time. “It does not cohere. It does not work as a film.”

Nonetheless, Damon agrees with Zhang that the film is not based mostly in cultural appropriation, nor does it traffick stereotypes, as a result of his character William Gavin was by no means meant to be Chinese language and finally ends up studying from the troopers on the Nice Wall. Evaluating it to movies like “Dances With Wolves” and “Avatar,” Damon defined, “It is an outsider comes into a brand new tradition, finds worth within the tradition, brings some talent from the skin that aids them of their combat in opposition to no matter they usually’re all modified without end.” (Curiously, Damon turned down a task in “Avatar.”)

One one that actually does not like “The Nice Wall,” although, is one in all Damon’s three daughters, who he says was 15-years-old on the time. “Every time she talks concerning the film, she calls it ‘The Wall,'” he laughed. “And I am like, come on, it is referred to as The Nice Wall. And he or she’s like, ‘Dad, there’s nothing nice about that film.’ She’s one of many funniest individuals I do know.”

Regardless of Damon’s daughter’s obvious finest needs, “The Nice Wall” is streaming on Netflix now.
